About CSAA

The Charter School Athletic Association (CSAA) is the premier athletic conference for charter schools in New York City. The South Division features 8 competitive teams vying for the championship.

Format: Teams play each other twice (home and away). Top teams advance to playoffs.

Season Format

Regular Season: 14 games (2 games vs each division opponent)

Playoffs: Top 4 teams from each division advance

Championship: Single-elimination tournament to determine CSAA champion

Standings: 3 points for win, 1 point for draw, 0 for loss

Eligibility Requirements

Age & Grade

  • Maximum 8th grade & 14 years old
  • Team allowed one (1) 15-year-old player on roster
  • Students who turn 16 during calendar year cannot participate
  • Must be enrolled in and attend a CSAA member school

Physical Exam

  • Each athlete must have physical exam within last calendar year

Important: Using an ineligible player results in forfeit and win awarded to opposing team.

Uniforms & Equipment

Uniform Requirements

  • Full matching uniforms by first game (tops and bottoms)
  • Unique numbers for each player (6-inch numbers on back)
  • Jersey numbers cannot switch between players
  • Goalkeepers must wear different colored jersey

Equipment

  • Full-length protective shin guards required
  • Soccer appropriate footwear required
  • Aluminum or metal cleats NOT allowed
  • All jewelry, piercings, and bands must be removed

Game Format

Duration

  • Two 20-minute halves
  • 5-minute intermission between periods
  • 15-minute forfeit time (strictly enforced)

Team Size

  • 11v11: 2 girls must be on field at all times
  • 11v11: Minimum 9 players to start
  • 8v8: 1 girl must be on field at all times
  • 8v8: Minimum 6 players to start

Substitutions

  • Can be made at any point of the game
  • Must notify referee before subbing

Point System & Standings

  • Win: 3 points
  • Forfeit Win: 3 points
  • Tie/Draw: 1 point
  • Loss: 0 points
  • Forfeit Loss: 0 points

Playoff Tiebreakers

  • Point system
  • Goal differential
  • Head to head

Playoff Eligibility

  • Player must play in at least half of regular season games
  • Exceptions for injured players at Director's discretion

Card System & Discipline

Yellow Card

  • Player must leave field, can return at next substitution
  • Two yellow cards = Red Card (automatic ejection)
  • 5 yellow cards in regular season = 1 game suspension

Red Card

  • Automatic ejection from game
  • Minimum 2-game suspension
  • Commissioner may adjust suspension

Fighting/Altercations

  • Any player who throws a punch = ejected + 1 game suspension
  • Team fight = possible 1 game or full season suspension
  • Players leaving sideline for altercation = ejected + 1 game suspension

Sportsmanship & Conduct

Pre/Post Game

  • Teams must shake hands before and after each game
  • Exceptions for injured players (coach must inform referee)

Sideline Rules

  • Only coaches, players, and managers allowed on sideline
  • Coaches/managers must be in team apparel
  • No spectators on sideline during game
  • Teams must remove trash from area after game

Behavior

  • Foul language, obscene gestures, or abuse of referees not tolerated
  • May result in ejection, forfeiture, suspension, or league ejection
  • Intentional tackling, elbowing, cheap shots = ejection

Additional Policies

Safety Requirements

  • AED unit and CPR certificate required for all coaches
  • Game cannot proceed without AED on site
  • Each coach must supervise team until safely away from competition site

Score Reporting

  • Winning team must submit score within 48 hours
  • If not submitted, game awarded to opposing team

Filming

  • Coaches/ADs may record own games only
  • Parents may only film their children's games
  • Filming allowed for review of altercations or injuries
